Poplar Double Pocket Doors
Great pair of oversized pocket doors
salvaged from a Brownstone home in Brooklyn, New York prior to its
renovation. Each door is made of solid poplar and has four recessed panels
on both sides.
Restoration: When we found the doors, they were heavily
painted (see last photo), and we weren't sure what type of wood they were.
We scraped until we got to the wood, which had a reddish color stain. We
sanded a little to get to the bare wood, and found that it was a
brownish-red color. We immediately assumed that because the doors were
fairly heavy, came from an upscale home, and the wood appeared brownish-red,
the doors were made of walnut or mahogany. Since the doors didn't have any
detail and would be fairly easy to strip, we let one of the new guys work on
them. He got very far until one of the more experienced guys told him to
stop stripping because the doors are made of poplar. We later found out,
that that the doors had been in fire at some point after they were stained
and before they were painted. The fire singed the top of the doors and
because of the reddish color stain, the area appeared brownish-red.
Coincidentally, that happened to be the area we used to identify the wood!
For anyone who isn't familiar with poplar, it's a soft wood, which is
normally painted. Had we known this from the beginning, we would've only
scuff-sanded the doors to prepare the surface for a fresh coat of paint.
However, here they are almost completely stripped!
Both doors were also equipped with knobs, rosettes, keyhole covers, and
mortise locks. I'm not sure why anyone would equip sliding doors with
hardware made for swinging doors. Judging by the construction, these were
always sliding doors, and weren't converted. However, they could be
converted into a swinging pair--email us if you're interested.
We removed the hardware and filled the holes with solid poplar. We also
patched a few breaks and deep chips with solid poplar.
Hardware: The doors have wheels on the bottom, but no other
hardware.
Since we've filled the areas where the original hardware was installed,
you now have the opportunity to install your hardware wherever you like
without having to consider or work around pre-existing holes.
* We have one or two double pocket door sets available (see our other
auctions). If you buy the hardware from us, we'll install it for free.
Condition: Both doors are strong, sturdy, and great shape with
only minor surface scrapes and scratches.
Oversized pocket doors of any wood type are a great buy at this low price.
Considering that we've made all necessary repairs, and stripped them about
80%, you have the chance to walk away with an amazing deal--don't miss out!
